Homeowner’s Rehab, Inc. (HRI) was established in 1972 to create and preserve affordable housing for low and moderate income households in Cambridge, Massachusetts. HRI accomplishes this through programs that stabilize homeownership for existing owners, create new homeownership opportunities for first-time homebuyers, and provide affordable rental housing. HRI’s typical developments include low income and moderate income units as well as some market rate units, as HRI believes in the benefits of mixed-income housing. Also typical of HRI’s developments is giving residents a voice in the management and operations of their respective properties. This can be accomplished through cooperatives, tenant’s associations and trusts which share in the ownership.
Description:
In order to aid residents in preserving and stabilizing their status as homeowners, HRI runs a Home Improvement Program. Financial and technical assistance is offered to homeowners who wish to make improvements to their homes. More than 500 units have been renovated for low and moderate income homeowners, thereby stabilizing the residency of these households. An affiliate of HRI, Cambridge Neighborhood Apartment Housing Services, Inc. (CNAHS), concentrates on creating new and maintaining existing affordable housing. This is accomplished through new construction and rehabilitation as well as by providing low interest loans to multi-family housing owners who are willing to keep the units affordable. HRI employs 9 full-time paid staff who collectively possess a wealth of knowledge of, and experience in, affordable housing development. The organization is governed by a 16-person board of directors which is made up of professionals in the affordable housing industry as well as community residents.
History:
Since 1972, HRI has developed over 1,400 units and controls approximately 825 units of housing in Cambridge.
