St. Helena's House Winter Holiday Opportunities

Last updated on November 12, 2008

St. Helena's House provides independent housing to seniors and younger disabled persons. Managed by Maloney Properties, Inc., our goal is to create a healthy community for all residents. We offer a range of services which help meet the needs of the residents as they age or grow more frail. St. Helena's represents a continuing commitment to quality affordable housing.

Description:
St. Helena's House is a rehabilitated 74 unit apartment building in Boston's South End. Modern studio and one-bedroom apartments are featured. In addition to the studios and one bedroom apartments, there is a 9 room congregate facility geared specifically to the needs of senior men and women requiring transitional housing. There is a full time on-site Resident Service Coordinator (RSC)on staff. The RSC is responsible for knowing or finding out about the many services available to elderly and disabled people. Assistance in arranging necessary services is provided. This helps residents lead a fuller life and enables them to live independently in their own home. The RSC works with local agencies, community service providers and resident councils to bring about self-sufficiency, satisfaction, quality of life and well-being. Activities, programs, and workshops are also coordinated.

History:
St. Helena's House has existed for over 100 years, first as a home for working women and now as subsidized housing for elders and younger disabled people. Started by Archbishop Williams, the Working Girl's Home, as it was first known, housed numbers of young women immigrating from Europe to earn their living in the United States. Over the years, St. Helena's housed women of all ages and occupations. In the 60's, approximately 100 women called the building home. Meals were catered and served cafeteria-style. In 1985, financial constraints and a sharp decline in occupancy led the Planning Office for Urban Affairs of the Archdiocese of Boston to convert St. Helena's from a rooming house to affordable apartments.
