Our mission is to reduce the risk of suicide in the community by befriending individuals in despair and crisis, and by providing outreach and education.
Description:
Samaritans provides a 24 hour hotline service and Samariteens (teens befriending teens)operates from 3-9pm daily. We offer a completely confidential service to individuals feeling suicidal, in despair or crisis. By befriending (compassionate, non-judgemental listening), providing outreach and education our hope is to reduce the risk of suicide.
History:
Samaritans was founded in 1974 by Monica Dickens, the great grand daughter of Charles Dickens. She started out in the basement of Arlington Street church. There was one phone line and 20 volunteers. We are now over 25 years old and have over 100 volunteers varying in age (15+) and backgrounds.
