GRAND NEWS Community Newspaper

Warning: This listing is no longer actively maintained. The information below is likely to be out of date.
Last updated on August 20, 2003

The GRAND NEWS mission is to build the community by reporting and supporting family and block level activities in Wooster Square, Fair Haven, State Street, Foxon, Fair Haven Heights, The Annex and Morris Cove; organize the community by providing information about schools, churches, sports teams, social agencies, government, eastside history, events, recreation and meetings; and develop the community by promoting local businesses and improvements in facilities and housing while monitoring environmental impact.

Description:
The GRAND NEWS Community Newspaper is sponsored by the Fair Haven Housing Initiative, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation. GRAND NEWS implements the Initiative's mission by facilitating social, economic and housing development on the eastside of New Haven. Our GRAND NEWS Committee edits the paper and is open to interested volunteers. The majority of the Initiative's board members are eastside residents. The board is elected at an annual meeting, and meets several times a year.

History:
The Fair Haven Housing Initiative was incorporated in 1994. Five years ago we sponsored a project that supported over 400 activities and events at the block level for kids and other residents in Fair Haven. Three years ago we completed the renovation of eight houses with twenty affordable apartments in the vicinity of the Saint Rose School on Richard Street. We are a member of Elm City Congregations Organized (ECCO) which is the "market rate" developer for the Quinnipiac Terrace rebuilding project. We published the first edition of GRAND NEWS in July 2003.
