Calcutta House exists to serve the most fragile persons with AIDS and to support the self-empowerment of each person to live as fully as their situation permits. We provide supportive housing with services responsive to the individual: those who are dying, those who are able to rebuild their lives and move on to independence, and those who will continue to require the assistance of supportive housing. We work with each person to progress towards his/her potential and to achieve attainable and realistic goals.
Description:
Calcutta House has two highly supportive AIDS residential facilities providing housing (private rooms) and highly skilled care to men and women who are seriously ill and/or dying due to AIDS. Most of our clients are homeless, recovering from drug use, seriously ill or dying due to AIDS, and need nursing, social and spiritual services, in a safe, loving, non-judgemental, and dignified environment.
History:
Calcutta House is a nonprofit organization founded by the Christian Brothers in 1986, incorporated in 1987, and having transformed itself and it's services over the past 19 years from a five-room rowhouse in West Philadelphia, to two highly specialized and designed homes in Central Philadelphia that serve the needs of adult men and women who are in end-stage, but struggle to survive and hope to recovere from their illnesses, and build a healthy and independent life.
