The Maine School Science Volunteers is seeking people with engineering, math or science background to volunteer in middle school science programs.

We are mainly a mid-coast Maine organization although we have made arrangement outside this area. We train and place volunteers with teachers and classrooms. The placements are highly individualized with school, teacher, time, nature of involvement and duration of the placement worked out between the teacher and the volunteer. After a short training period we suggest a preliminary visit to the classroom to observe and work out details with the classroom teacher.

Our volunteers have assisted in whole units such as electricity; made a presentation on how to weigh planets, assisted a teacher without background in a topic prior to the school year, and just provided a helpful hand in conducting a lab with many groups.

We require a science background, but the middle school program does not require expertise in any specific area. We have had a chemist provide invaluable assistance on a unit on Hissing Cockroaches with the help of the internet.
