LOCATION: Private home or other living site.

SUPERVISOR: Volunteer Programs Manager.

HOURS PER WEEK: One to two hours weekly (flexible).

QUALIFICATIONS: Patience; interest in persons with vision loss; dependability; non-judgmental attitude; safe driving record.

REQUIREMENTS: Insurance coverage for minimum liability of $50,000/$100,000 and $5,000 in property damage; proof of insurance; copy of driver's license; review of driving history.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Use personally-owed vehicle to provide transportation and assistance for persons who are legally blind for any of the following:

  • supermarket
  • drugstore
  • clothing store
  • other purchases
  • bank
Note: Volunteer may take shopping list, do shopping alone, return, and assist with putting items away.

ORIENTATION/TRAINING: General one-hour orientation to blindness, the services of the agency, and sighted guide techniques; occasional continuing education programs available; ongoing communication with Volunteer Programs Manager.

COMMITMENT: One year.

Must have valid driver's license, safe driving record, and appropriate automobile insurance.

Directions:

 A. FROM THE SOUTH:
From I-91 North past Hartford:
Take Exit 34 (Route 159 Windsor/Wilson). At the end of the ramp, cross the street onto BESB's parking lot.

B. FROM THE NORTH:
From I-91 South:
Take Exit 34. At the end of the ramp, turn onto North Main Street (Hartford). Go under highway, past the light and the gas station; take a right onto BESB's parking lot.

From 291 West:
Take Exit 3 (Route 159 Windsor/Wilson). Turn left at second light. Proceed 3/4 mile. Turn left at light onto Windsor Avenue, just before bridge. First left is BESB parking lot.

C. FROM THE EAST:
From either 1-84 West or Route 2 West, proceed towards Hartford. Take the exit for I-91 North and follow the directions in "A" "FROM THE SOUTH."

D. FROM THE WEST:
Take I-84 East and proceed towards Hartford. Take the exit for I-91 North and follow the directions in "A" "FROM THE SOUTH."
