 Museum Description: As the oldest free-standing pathology laboratory in the nation, the museum offers the opportunity to use your talents in a truly unique environment. Housing an autopsy room, amphitheater, laboratories and brain specimens, the museum gives visitors a glimpse of the earliest research in scientific psychiatry where, in 1896, scientists began the search for the physical causes of mental illness. Job Description: Tour Guides will offer a dynamic and thematic hour-long tour to both scheduled groups and drop-in museum visitors. You can be a part of this fascinating museum by volunteering as a tour guide, creating an engaging educational atmosphere for museum visitors, and effectively communicating the story of life sciences at the turn of the 20th century, architecture, medicine, history and much more! Tasks: • Create an engaging atmosphere for visitor interaction and questions • Effectively communicate information to visitors about the museum’s history and key historic figures • Collect and report visitor questions, comments and suggested improvements
Qualifications: • Be at least 18 years of age • Good oral communication skills and comfortable speaking in public • Professional manner and neat appearance • Reliability and flexibility • Ability to retain historic information • Enjoyment of lifelong learning and the desire to learn as well as teach • Ability to retain historic information • Ability to be courteous, respectful, and patient with visitors • Be able to stand for long periods of time Minimum Time Commitment: Volunteers can work as many or few hours as they are able. However, we ask that volunteers be consistent in their scheduling. (For example: “I can work every Thursday” or “I can work the 1st Saturday of every month.”) Schedule: Tours take place from 10am to 4pm (last tour leaves at 3pm), Thursday through Saturday. Training: All volunteers will receive a docent training manual which consists of information such as the history of the Pathology Building, short biographies, and tour guide interpretive strategies. Volunteers will also shadow current tour guides and participate in several training workshops conducted at the museum.
