The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer,through research, education, advocacy, and service.
Description:
The American Cancer Society offers cancer patients and their families Hope, Progress, and Answers. With the help of volunteers, the Society provides local service programs for patients and families, educates the public on ways to prevent and detect cancer early, and operates a world-class research program that has supported 38 Nobel Prize winning scientists. The American Cancer Society offers the most up-to-date information about cancer, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at 800.ACS.2345 and www.cancer.org.
History:
Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 13 regional Divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the United States.
