Tutors at PHA Education Centers
Last updated on November 20, 2008

The Portland Housing Authority operates three (3) Neighborhood Network Centers where public housing youth in grades three(3) to twelve (12) have computer access and receive homework assistance. Prospective tutors who are interested in literacy and ELL teaching, secondary-level math and science, or the success and support of the Portland refugee population are particularly encouraged to volunteer. In addition, because many public housing parents are unfamiliar with the college application process, seniors need to be contacted and kept on track with the college application process. Some of our students have gone on to such prestigious colleges as Brown, Tufts, MIT, Holy Cross, and Wheaton.

Minimum commitment is a weekly 2 hour block of time Monday - Thursday between the hours of 3:30-7:30 P.M. Volunteers must be willing to have a police background check and be free of any felony convictions. The preferred minimum age for tutors is 20. Potential volunteers must be willing to visit the three centers for a brief orientation. The purpose is to ensure that the placement meets the expectations of both the volunteer and the center.
